The eldest child of the Messore family, Skyseer Caterina Messore (known as Catia to her family) was a promising young Intellectual-class meteorologist, having dedicated herself to a thorough understanding of the Empire’s weather and climate. However, it was that selfsame passion for meteorology that opened her eyes to the destruction wrought by the Empire’s disregard for the environment around them, realizing that the volatile and often dangerous weather of the Imperial core was the result of the pollution and devastation resulting from Vuurstahl breaking the world down into resources to be profited from.[1] It was this awakening that led her to throw her lot in with the Unemployed, in an attempt to throw the yoke of the Empire from her homeland of Selvaggia.
With her kind heart and gift for bringing people together, Caterina quickly became something of a figurehead for the Selvaggian Unemployed[2], including her fiancée Logsplitter Raul Scavo, who became one of the revolution’s most tenacious frontliners. Caterina herself was even known to take to the field as a guiding presence, using the power of her Zou Yan to turn Selvaggia’s environment against its oppressors, and purge the poison the Empire seeped into the land. It was this position as a figurehead, however, that ultimately proved her undoing; after the Empire took back the Lupine Wall and took the revolution’s leader into custody, Caterina was identified as a key figure for the following cleanup crews to take down as well. Having lost their hold of the captive Selvaggian leader just prior, the soldiers were determined to not repeat their mistake– Caterina Messore was made an example of, executed without trial for her crimes against the Empire.
The spectre of Caterina hangs heavy over her surviving family, each doing their best in turn to live up to who they thought she was. While Fia attempts to be the glue keeping her family together, embodying her sister’s kindness, Nilo has taken to her other side– that of a revolutionary who would not stand to let anyone else suffer under the Empire’s heel.

- ↑ [Cecilia] looks down at the table. "...When I went into meteorology, I understood those stories about your sister. About how her job affected her. When you go through the records, it's insane." She rests her forehead against one hand. "Did you know it used to snow in Vuurstahl in the winter? Over a century ago, back before industry had really taken off, back before they were burning coal and oil and all that non-stop. It used to get cold enough in the winter to snow, and everyone's forgotten. They take it as normal to see the ground in Kohlefest." She sighs wearily. "Seeing something like that, it's hard not to be radicalized." (Shore Leave 2, 2/2/2025)
- ↑ "Selvaggians!" [Raul] barks over the rising wind. "The Imperials are here to see me deposed-- to see us broken! We will strike them down here, and remain victorious! For Catia!"
"For Catia!" comes the thunderous reply from all around them, Selvaggians all across the wall as they raise their weapons in solidarity. (Mission Log, 4/4/2024)
